This list has been floating about on the net for a while. I did not get round to making a post with it in 2008. Well, it is only a bit of fun anyway, and better late than never, eh?

Far more no’s than yes’s. Oh well. The whole thing obviously originated in America. One should really make one’s own list. Many of the topics on this list do not interest me in the least.

Another New Blog

Although I have lots of blogs, apparently I don’t get it. I don’t know how to make a blog that is popular and succesful. Hmnn. I have been studying the subject, and there is a number of things that I have done wrong:

I don’t bring a lot of lists
My posts are too long
Most of my blogs are not in English, and those that are, are boring
I don’t bring enough pictures
I’m too anonymous
I’m too private
I’m too full of contradictions
I have too many ads
I don’t have enough ads
I don’t have the right ads
…

Anyway, I’ve tried once again at NoNameYet.dk, and we’ll just wait and see how that goes.

Lots of blogs

Several of my websites run WordPress, not neccessarily because they are blogs as such, but blogging software comes in very handy for a lot of different purposes.

Where some websites are concerned, you have a good idea as to how big they are going to be, you may have a very detailed plan for the entire site even before you have written half a line of code. For such sites, fixed pages are ideal.

For other sites, you know from the beginning that you will be adding more and more material to site as time goes by. You have a general idea as to what the properties of the site will be, but you do not know exactly how large a site or how many “pages” you are going to need. For such sites, blogging software such as WordPress seems ideal. You can use it for posts like I am doing here, or you can make pages with it.

It is easy to use, and once set up, you don’t actually need to know a lot about html, php or what-have-you, although such knowledge never did hurt a webmaster.

WordPress is now so popular that – alas – some pimply little individuals do their level worst to find vulnerabilities in it and deface sites written with the software. All one can do about that is to hope that the WordPress creators stay on their mettle and that one always has the latests edition of the software.

The Natives Are Getting Restless

One of said natives in this case being myself. I seem to be learning a lot of new (to me) things about web design these days and wanting to try them out straight away. This means that this site may have acquired “new clothes” every other time somebody comes visiting. At the same time, I have abandoned my former strategy of leaving a few pages in the previous design so that people might see what they looked like.

Up to now, I have not deleted the old pages that I already had saved, and probably I will not do that. For my own purposes, I need something by which to measure the development of my taste and skills in the field of web design, such as they are.

Quote of the Day: To Have or Not to Have …

For some time now, I have had an rss-feed from answers.com with a “Quote of the Day”. Now, obviously, I do not get any say in which quotes they chose to bring. For me, it is a take-it-or-leave-it deal, and so far, I have chosen to take it. Today, however, I do not really like the quote, and so I am wondering if I should cancel the feed. By the way, I am not going to quote the quote (sic!) in this post, because the one in the rss-feed at least is gone by tomorrow, and usually I do not cancel my own posts, so by putting it here, I would have perpetuated it, which would be completely counterproductive to my intentions.

If, therefore, you read this after september 2nd and you are very curious, you will have to find out elsewhere, what the quote for september 2nd 2008 actually was…

Launch of "New" Website

Over a year ago I registered the domain hennys.eu without really knowing what I was going to use it for. For a while, I just kept a placeholder there, then I needed at sandbox environment for a Moodle installation. In the meantime, the sandbox environment became superfluous, because our production site is up and running, so I installed WordPress there, thinking that I might use it for some Theme designs for WordPress. Yesterday, I happened to make a design featuring a lookout tower here in Hjørring where we live. That gave me an idea: I have really needed a platform for my more or less political views. So there you are, turned even more opinionated by a picture!

No, not really. Just some things coming together in a way that made me realize a few things. Not the worst thing that can happen to a person!

I: So you have written a website about the Mitford sisters?
Me: That’s right.
I: You have written it in Danish. Since the Mitford sisters were English, would it not be a good idea to write it in English?
Me: Well, no. I do not really think so. All my sources are in English, so anybody who is interested can just examine my list of sources.
I: So we should not be expecting an English version of your pages?
Me: No, I do not think so. It is not as if I have anything new to contribute. I have just gathered some sources, and now I am writing some pieces about what I have learned in my own language.
I: OK, thank you.
Me: Don’t mention it.

A Good, Old Tidy-up

I am no longer updating the original pages. They are now consigned to the museum. Everything here is now running WordPress.
Let’s see, how long it will be, till I get tired of that! The stationery is still there, so is the evaluation of free webspace, though I have to say thay only very few of those free pages are still up, 4-5 years after they were made. Maybe that is too much to ask?
